Survival Doesn’t Always Have To Be The Fittest But Rather The Most Prepared
By: John Thompson

The Law of Natural Selection is all about survival of the fittest, but when have humans ever paid attention to natural law. We did not go to the moon because we could jump high. We went there because we could plan and prepare. We are clever little buggers with magnificent brains and fingers. When it comes to survival, your ability to bench press 300 pounds and run a four minute mile might help you, but your ability to think, adapt, plan, and prepare most certainly will. The strongest will not survive, but the most prepared will.

No one hopes for a catastrophic failure of the systems that make modern life possible, but there are signs that this is a strong possibility if not inevitable. Economic, environmental and political factors seem to being reaching a critical mass. No one knows which straw will break the camel’s back, but we do know that that poor camel is carrying a heavy load. So how do you prepare for the worst?

Plan
When things finally break down, there will be chaos. People who are dependent upon modern conveniences like cell phones, electricity, and clean water will lose their minds. The government may try to step in, but we have seen how that worked during Hurricane Katrina. FEMA is not prepared for a disaster on a citywide scale. They are certainly not capable of handling a global disaster. In this environment, those that have a plan in place will stand a much greater chance of surviving than those that do not.
If you live in a large city, plan on how to get out and where you will go. The cities will not be safe for beast or man.
If you live in the country, you are ahead of the curve, but you still need to consider how you will deal with refugees and how you will take care of problems like water, sewage, and food.

Prepare
Preparation is the key to survival. We can all hope that services will quickly be restored, but they may not be. In the event of a sustained collapse, you need to be prepared with survival gear and the ability to feed your family and ensure their safety. For lack of a better word, this means hoarding. You should have at least a year’s worth of food on hand and seed for planting. Prepare for the worst but hope for the best should be your motto.

Study
If services disappear, that means you will be on your own, and your survival will be entirely dependent upon your skills. People have forgotten so much. They did not need to know how to dig a well. Your grandparents may not have known html code, but they could read the weather. You need to start thinking like your grandparents. Learn the skills they took for granted. At the very least, if nothing happens, you will have a set of wonderful new hobbies.

Llama Omni .45 reflections

I’ve owned quite a few guns in my day. The Llama Omni .45 was one of the first handguns I ever owned. I’d heard differing opinions about Llamas and their quality or performance, but I was a young married man and this used Llama Omni .45 was all I could afford.

This gun is by no means easy to disassemble. It’s like a freaking puzzle box, every time I try it I get a tad further than before. I’ve also busted the plunger pin that holds the slide stop in place, causing me to have to mill one out of metal with a dremel tool. Add all this up and it should tell you that this gun is a pain to clean. My cleanings have been a few patches up the barrel (still fully assembled) a spritz of WD40 and a wipe down, not very throrough.

What I can tell you is that this gun will shoot every time I pull the trigger. It will hit where I aim it, time after time after time! I do want to mention that I had feed errors with both the original Llama magazine and a Colt 1911 magazine, but Wilson Combat Magazines fixed that problem for me. They have proven so reliable that these are what I now use i n my Llama Omni .45 100% of the time.

In the picture below, I was sighting in some guns, so the target was well peppered when I decided to try a test. I wanted to practicing shooting the target as if an assailant had a prisoner in front of them. I pretended that the darker grey was the hostage’s head and the lighter grey was the kidnapper. You can see the results from this test in the red outlined box. This was only at 10 yards, but it’s very consistent.

I’ve shot the heck out of the Llama Omni .45 and if there was a life or death situation that called for handgun fire, this would be my first choice. Keep in mind that no two firearms are the same, so your milage may vary. If you get the chance to shoot one or pick one up cheap, you should consider it strongly.
